Tipping The Tennis Pro

Service Industry (Various Positions) gives expert video advice on: Why should I tip a tennis pro?; What's the best way to tip a tennis pro?; How should I tip a tennis pro during the holidays?

Why should I tip a tennis pro?

I don't think it's really a custom, generally speaking, to tip as in a lot of other industries, or services, you know, whether hair cutting or waitering, or something like that. And I know what the reason is, but I guess it's because we charge a fairly decent hourly thing for a lesson. I think people figure it's not the worst job in the world, they are out in the sun, they're teaching us tennis. They're getting paid fairly decently. It's like anything else. I don't agree with giving a tip unless it really merits giving a tip I think is what I'm trying to say.

What's the best way to tip a tennis pro?

I've gotten non-money tips. If they frequently hit the ball like in the street, you end up losing a lot of tennis balls and they like you and they like the lessons, occasionally they'll come back the next week, they'll give you new tennis balls, that sort of thing. I've gotten referrals too, that was just kind of a form of tipping. If they really like you and they're with you they'll call their buddy at work or if they have a buddy at work who's interested in lessons, they'll refer you; you get more lessons that way. So that happens frequently. But as far as like a cash tip, I don't know. Maybe other tennis pros have, but I just haven't.
