Tipping Your Server
Service Industry (Various Positions) gives expert video advice on: Why should I tip a server?; How much should I tip a server?; What was your best or worst tip? and more...
Why should I tip a server?
I have been doing this for about five years and I am just now starting to really feel comfortable in to it. Seriously things that go behind scene are. There are times when you have eight tables. There are most of us who are working really hard.
What was your best or worst tip?
I have actually gotten two hundred dollar tips. This one time I got a hundred dollar tip from this couple. We had a really nice like rapport and they were professional dancers and I was like, "I love dancing" and they were like, "We know J-Lo." And I was like, "Oh, my God!" And then I had someone who was a restaurant owner and we just got to talking and he tipped me a hundred dollars....The worst is when you have someone that you are talking with and that you are friendly with and you feel like you are giving them really good service and then they tip you 10%. We're taking care of you so take care of us, you know?
Tips & Comments
I have been a server at the Olive Garden for 3 years...whoever thinks that serving isn't that hard....think again, anytime your dealing with the general public and making them happy...it's hard! I work my butt off for my tables giving them the best service that I can...and believe me and server knows if they gave bad service and are already expecting a crappy tip or no tip, if they know they sucked....But when we KNOW that we have done everthing for you and in a timely manner with a smile and you stiff us...it is a slap in the face. I know too many people who come in and eat and run you around like a crazy person and leave nothing...and yes we work for less than minimum wage but a serving job pays cash and you don't have to work many hours...it is perfect for collage students...or like myself I am a mom and I just work at night time when my husband is home with the kids to make extra money....but they have people who do it full time and work really hard and deserved to be tipped 15 percent at the very least!
Please explain this to me...I sit down at a place and order a meal for $6.99, then I go back next week and order a meal for $25.99. The same ammount of effort was taken on the servers part to bring me my meal on one plate, but I somehow have to pay them more because the meals costs more money??? I only tip well if the person went out of thier way to make it a nice experience. I def. agree with the statment below in Why do we have to pay employees?
A lot of people feel negative about tipping because you are paying MORE for your food because it IS a sit down restuarant. These companies save TONS of money each year by making it the responability of the customer to pay thier employees.
I think It's a shame that you have to pay for companies employees.
If you live in a big city and go to good restaurants you know you tip 15-20 percent as part of the cost of going out to dinner. Or you are tacky and cheap.
To the comment about servers getting paid minimum wage. Um...no. I've been a server for 2 years and get paid $2.62 an hour. Ha! A better reason to tip! (Although yes, we are taxed on our sales)
This lady doesn't know what she's talking about. A good server would never tip 0% no matter what the situation was. Most of the times is no even the server's fault. You better go put yourself on a diet fat ass...
Remember, servers get taxed a percentage of their sales!!! So even though servers get paid minimum wage, they still get heavily taxed so it does cost them money when inconsiderate people don't tip.
I'm sorry but I have to disagree with give the waiter/waitress nothing for bad service. If you leave nothing then what they would think is that you just forgot. Instead just tip them a couple of pennies and they'll know that you didnt forget
If they pay $2.13 don't take the job. I think we need to get the goverment to fix that. it is a normal jo and you hould get paid that way. Don't ask clients to fix it and tax them 20%
