Utility Bills Explained

Jane Furnival (Author) gives expert video advice on: How do I find out which utility companies I am with?; How do I switch utility companies? and more...

Are there any websites to help me compare utility company prices?

Websites that can help you compare your fuel prices include: uswitch.com, simplyswitch.com and which.com.

Are utility prices affected by where you live?

Utility prices aren't really affected by where you live. Unless you live somewhere flat and windy, in which case, you could think about installing a windmill to get wind generated fuel much cheaper. Or, if you live in a property in an area with a lot of water power, you could install a special energy-generating water pump.

Are utility prices affected by the time of year?

Fuel prices tend to go up during the summer, ready for the winter. Really, fuel prices depend on major world economic and political factors. As with banks and building societies, petrol suppliers put prices up very quickly, and they don't lower them quite so fast. I recommend not locking yourself into any long-term price-fixed fuel deals for your utility bills, which can cost you up to £75 to get out of. There is one thing that's worth doing during the summer: get your boiler fixed or replaced then, because it makes your utility bills much cheaper.
