Vehicles And Trains
When is it safe to drive across train tracks?
When you're approaching train tracks, always slow down, if not stopping completely, just to make sure there's not a train coming. Watch for any flashing lights. Listen for any bells or signals. And if you see the gates are down but you don't see a train coming, don't assume there's not one coming. There probably is, and that train could be there before you know it, because trains move at a very high rate of speed. And even if you see a train in the distance and think you can make it, you really can't, because trains are moving faster than they appear to be moving.
How do I safely cross train tracks in my car?
The safest way to cross train tracks is make sure there's not a line of traffic in front of you that are attempting to do the same thing. This is because you could get stuck behind other vehicles and you could actually get stuck on the tracks, and that's not a great place to be. Also, don't attempt to shift gears while you're on the tracks because in certain vehicles that could cause you to stall out. So, be very careful when crossing the track and make sure you have room to do that before a train comes.
