Wedding Cake Decoration
Where can I find inspiration for my wedding cake design?
You can find inspiration for your wedding cake design at the location of your reception, from the color of the bride's dress, her lace work on her dress, or the jewelry she's going to wear. You can also find inspiration with the food that you are going to serve; if you're going to serve Italian you can have grapes as an accent on your cake. Those two are the main focus: the location and your style of fabric.
Should my wedding cake reflect my wedding theme?
Your wedding cake can reflect your style, or the theme of your wedding. It can be traditional or modern. It can be fun like the Topsy-Turvy cake, or the traditional white on white. It could be colorful. But it's really entirely up to you and the style that you want your wedding to be.
Should I provide my wedding cake decorator with sample flowers or fabric?
Provide your cake decorator with sample fabric and flowers, so that if you want the color of your cake to match your dress then she has that swatch to work off. The flowers are also a good indication of how she will place them on your wedding cake.
Can I use fresh flowers to decorate my wedding cake?
Fresh flowers can absolutely be used on a wedding cake, provided that they are pesticide free and not poisonous. Calla lilies are very popular to use but the stem emits a liquid that causes an allergic reaction in some people, so a good cake decorator will wrap the stems so that it doesn't ooze.
What kinds of flowers are safe to decorate my wedding cake?
Typically, as long as the flowers are pesticide free, you can use roses, Stephanopoulos, ranunculus, daisies, lilies, orchids - the list goes on and on. But make sure that they are pesticide free.
Can my wedding cake be a weird shape?
Your wedding cake can be a weird shape. I've done wedding cakes before that are called topsy-turvy. The cakes are at a 45 degree angle, usually stacked on top of each other, making it look like the Mad Hatter hat or a mushroom. Have fun with it, if you want to do a wedding cake that's non-traditional.
Is it safe to decorate my wedding cake with flowers?
It's safe to use fresh flowers on a wedding cake, providing that they are not the poisonous kind and that they are pesticide free. Confer with your florist as far as what the poisonous flowers are. Offhand, I know calla lilies stems are poisonous but their flower buds are not.
Can I decorate my wedding cake with flowers that can be eaten?
Wedding cakes can be decorated with flowers that can be eaten. Usually, they are violets, or ranunculus, or even rose petals. What a decorator does is they take the edible flower, dip it in an egg wash and then sugar crystallize it. That way it is edible and delicious, and it looks great on the wedding cake.
Are wedding cakes ever airbrushed?
Wedding cakes can be airbrushed. The unusual cake that I made that was for the Sally and Jack cake from the Nightmare Before Christmas; it was a black cake. I had to airbrush it because if I had used black icing, every guest would have had black teeth.
