Wedding Gown Care And Solutions
What is the difference between pressing and steaming?
The difference between pressing and steaming a wedding gown is very important. First and foremost, it should always be undertaken by a professional. You would never steam or press a bridal gown yourself. And you do need to have the right equipment. The gowns, if they are steamed, are steamed under pressure so that it's a dry steam system. No actual water hits your gown, because water can stain a gown.
How long does it take to press a wedding gown?
It typically will take up to two hours for the professional to press your wedding gown. When you come to collect your gown, it will be pressed and on a bust form, packed with tissue and in a 10-foot gown bag. The train is all hanging down and the gown is then ready for you to wear.
How do I decide my wedding gown's color?
It's very important, when you're looking at the colour of wedding gowns, to have somebody expert to explain the possibilities to you. A pure white gown typically looks better on a bride who has olive skin and dark hair. For most Caucasian skin, a pure white gown washes us out too much and therefore ivory is a much better choice of colour. And ivory is typically just one shade off white. Unless you put it directly next to something white, it just looks like white to most people. There are other colour options in bridal gowns, and you may find that you prefer to have a little bit of something, perhaps more unusual, or you have a set colour in your wedding plans that this gown would complement very well. Many of the new gowns are coming in with colour accents of cafe, blue, pink, and many other colours. And it is possible to find gowns, whole gowns, made in cafe, pearl, and various other soft shades just off white.
Should my silk wedding gown be steamed or pressed?
A silk wedding gown should be steamed, but again with a pressurized steamer. Never ever use an ordinary domestic steamer on a silk gown because the water that comes out can mark your dress. You need to use a professional steamer that typically only a reputable store would have.
Should my synthetic fabric wedding gown be steamed or pressed?
A synthetic wedding gown is much more user friendly and can be steamed or pressed. However, you still will not get the best results unless you're using a professional steam iron with a dry steam system.
Should I request that my seamstress steam rather than press my wedding gown?
It is probably difficult to request specifically whether you want your gown steamed or pressed. You really have to rely on the professionalism of the person you're choosing to do that task, and your bridal salon should guide you to this effect.
Should I ever iron my wedding gown?
Ironing your own wedding gown is a very risky business, and I would not recommend it. However, for instance, if you are in a situation where you are getting married in a remote location--perhaps on an island or somewhere like that - you can take a small handheld steamer. This will release most wrinkles in the cloth. And even hanging a gown on the back of the bathroom door when you're taking a shower will release most wrinkles.
Should I put my dress on a hanger before the wedding?
The dresses are usually kept on hangers before the wedding, but if they have straps on them, do not hang the dress by the straps. Use the loops inside the dress that are stiched in specifically for this purpose of hanging the gown before the wedding.
How can I safely transport my wedding gown to my destination wedding?
To safely transport your dress for a location wedding, we usually advise that you take it as carry-on luggage. If it's a good store, they will even pack it for you, and we have done this on many an occasion. We keep it in plastic so that it's waterproof. We usually recommend that you bring in a clean towel and we roll the dress around the towel. We do not hard-press fold it. This way there are minimum creases in the gown and sometimes we've even pressed a gown and rolled it in the method I've explained, and the gown is ready to wear when it arrives at it's destination. Never put a bridal gown in the cargo hold of a plane because you may lose it.
How can I wear the strapless gown I want when my church restricts that style of dress?
Talk to your bridal consultant if you have restrictions on the style of your wedding gown that you wish to wear. For instance, most manufacturers will make a shawl to match your bridal gown. Or in many cases, they will also offer the choice of a bolero jacket or a shrug, which is something that can be worn during the ceremony and then taken off later at your reception.
