Do you enjoy being famous?
I never said I wanted to be famous. That thought never crosses my mind, I want to be famous. What I want to do is, have great terrific fun roles that require me to exert myself, and solve the problem of the role. Being famous has never occurred to me, and being famous, wanting to be famous never occurred to me, being famous generally never comes into my psyche. I see people looking at me and wondering if my hair is combed, or "aren't you?", and I say no, I'm not. I'm in an airport, and aren't you Shatner, No No I'm not, I look like him. If I were Shatner, would I be here? That sort of thing.
Does fame actually annoy you?
Yes, I'm annoyed all the time. I go around in a state of annoyance, much to the annoyance of my wife.
Why do you believe that interviews are so risky for celebrities?
When you ad-lib, when you're just talking. The thoughts come slowly, as against acting where you should get on with it because you have to have energy in the scene, at least in my opinion. You can be relaxed and laconic but you have to get on with it – get to the core of what you're doing. Something happens unless you choose not to do that. When you're talking, your thoughts aren't organized because you don't know what you're going to say next. Whatever comes out of your mouth is going to be heard by a lot of people, but you can't think of that because you'll get tongue-tied. You just have to let it go. That's what the experience is worth, I think – you just have to let it go. If you say something on tour you hope everybody will forgive you because you don't know what's coming out of your mouth next.
How do you continue to attract younger fans?
I understand cool and I understand hip, but if you try to be cool and you try to be hip, it's not cool.
What's the trouble with Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and other scandalous young celebrities?
