Women And Sexual Desire
Jennifer Berman (Director, Berman Women's Wellness Center) gives expert video advice on: What is a 'normal sex drive' for a woman?; How common is a low sex drive in women?; Can doctors help women with a low sex drive? and more...
What is a 'normal sex drive' for a woman?
Sexual function and dysfunction is individually defined. So my level of desire and sex drive could be entirely different, or what I feel good, could be entirely different than this woman's. What my testosterone level is to feel good is different than what her level is. So it's all individually defined and there is no normal range. It's all determined by level of satisfaction. So if a woman is experiencing a change in her libido where she's less interested in sex, where she has an aversion to sexual intimacy, then it becomes a problem. But a woman's sex drive fluctuates throughout the month, it fluctuates throughout the year, it fluctuates from day to day, person to person, so it really is individually defined.
How common is a low sex drive in women?
Loss of libido, or low sexual desire is the most common sexual function complaint in women overall across the board – so it is very common. The reasons for that can vary; the most common reason is ageing and menopause or hormonal imbalance. However, there are a multitude of other issues that can affect hormonal imbalance as well.
Can doctors help women with a low sex drive?
If a woman is experiencing loss of desire or low sex drive that is related to a hormone imbalance. Treatment with hormones is probably the standard of care. Which include estrogen, progesterone as well as testosterone. Testosterone is a critical hormone in woman as it is in men, in particular related to libido. There are other off label medications and supplements that are available to help enhance libido and desire. Diet and exercise even in and of itself separate from hormones can help and sleep can help enhance and improve libido. So there are simple lifestyle changes that women can make, medications that women can take and supplements that women can take to help with their libido.
How is sexual aversion disorder treated?
Sexual aversion disorder depending on what the cause is, often times when something has a phobic or that extreme of a negative quality. There tends to be some emotional, relational, psychological causes or outbursts, so these issuses need to be addressed first.Second, if there are any medical factors that can be addressed need to be addressed. And finally hormone imbalance. And often times again if it is low libido, testosterone is really a good medication for that. There are other medications that can be used off label that increase dopamine and increase oxytocin levels that help with libido as well.
Are there any foods, drugs or supplements that can increase a woman's sex drive?
You read a lot about foods that can increase the libido and in my impression, understanding, and review of the literature, all of it is anecdotal. There really isn't enough scientific evidence to say that if you eat oysters that you're going to become a Libidonist maven, and for that matter how much of this substance do you have to eat. That being said, there are some herbs and supplements such as Ginseng, Gingko, and Damiana that are associated with enhanced libido. That doesn't mean that it's going to be a cure but I use those things oftentimes in conjunction with hormones. Black Cohosh is one that helps with hot flashes and can also have a positive effect on the libido.
Tips & Comments
I'm a married woman but I don't understand why am I so eager and always thinking of sex with my husband all the time?
Kids, mixed with work, mixed with still doing all of the housework...leads to "keep your hands to yourself" syndrome. Maybe if males shouldered some of the load, we would feel more sexual rather than servant pack mules?
i wanna orgasm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sriraje26 U not making sence
How come scientists always try to help but they give us suck general answers? Sex to me isn't scientific,it's just natural. More than anything it's about your emotions and how you feel. I mean sure if your having raging animal sex feelings don't matter, but if you're truely making love it's so much more. I understand they're trying to help us and all,but there are so many people that don't know the difference between sex and love making. There's nothing science about it. I think information like this is all factual...not moral.
