In 1999 he founded the charity ‘Reprieve’. Reprieve lawyers represent people facing the death penalty, particularly in the USA and prisoners denied justice in the name of the ‘War on Terror,’ including those held without charge or trial in Guantánamo Bay and secret prisons around the world.
In 2000 Clive was awarded an OBE for “humanitarian services in the legal field”.
