I absolutely agree with what is being said about the affects heroin has on crime rates. It is cheaper to prescribe a safer and regulated form of heroin legally to addicts than it is to inprison them for theft for a certain amount of time because they were out trying to score it illegally. I know all to well of the damaging affects this has because i myself am a recovering addict and in the UK we are given Methadone as an alternative. Heroin withdrawel is one of the worst things you can endure. It is painful and it goes on for weeks. It is easier to steal some money or whatever to buy heroin than go through a slow painful withdrawel and you know that if you have the money to score then you can make that pain stop within minutes of taking heroin. Withdrawel simply cannot be easily done in the community, the temptation to commit crime and use again is all around you and the risk of re-lapse is too high. Proper detox centres need to be avaliable. At the moment the ones that do exist are either private and cost thousands to get into or the NHS funded clinics have a massive waiting list, by the time you get in you could be in prison or dead from an overdose. Non-users dont understand that heroin is one the most powerful and physically addictive drugs known to man. It took me between 3-4 days of regular use to get physically addicted thats how fast it gets you. I was naive and stupid to think that smoking such a small amount as i was would not bother me but it did. The first day i decided not to use any i was doubled up in pain all over my body within 24 hours and i knew the only thing that could take away that feeling of need and pain and anguish was the heroin. You sweat un-controllably but you are freezing cold. Your legs fell like they are on fire and all your nerve endings are going mad with pain because they are hyper- sensitive to the slightest touch and you cant keep still. Your arms and legs are flying all over the place and you cannot control it. You get the runs but you are also constipated from the heroin usage and your bowels and stomach are in knots with the most excruciating cramps. You cant stop sneezing or shaking, your a complete mess. You cant walk so unless there is somebody else with you to either go and score for you or nurse you through it then you are stuck. Most people by this stage would have already had commited a crime for the money to score because they know whats coming and once you have been through that nightmare you will do anything to avoid being there again. I cant condone crime but i can understand it if its a choice of being that ill you cant move for pain or raising £20 just to feel normal for another day then as an addict i know which one i would prefer. This is why prescribed Heroin or Supervised Methadone programmes are important because they give the addict the normality of a stable life thus preparing them for the motivational work needed to come off opiates for good. I had to use Methadone because as a single mother of 3 children i needed to stabilise my lifestyle and Methadone did this for me as detox at home was not an option for me, i have no one to take care of my 3 kids and theres no way i could look after them whilst withdrawing in that state. It was either Methadone for me or foster care for my children. My point is clear in my message, legally prescribed heroin decreases drug related crime and saves families. I wish i had never started using it, all i can say is that i thought it was the answer to my suffering of Post-natel depression at the time but it just made it worse. People think Heroin addiction is a scene from the film Trainspotting. Its not at all. Its far worse. If reading this puts one person off using Heroin or inspires an addict to get clean then it was worth while me sitting here at midnight to share this with the members of this site. Thanks for reading and good luck to anyone struggling with addiction.xxx
